BIORING – Engineering high performance biocoatings from renewable reactive building blocks

In this article

FAB Group is a partner in the Horizon project, funded by the European Commission, entitled “BIORING – Engineering high performance biocoatings from renewable reactive building blocks”. Its goal is to create a versatile, robust and scalable solution to meet the need for bio-based coatings for high-performance applications.

The project therefore intends to provide a platform of renewable building blocks and biomass oligomers for high-performance bio-based UV-curing coatings; as well as demonstrate improved product performance and health, safety, and end-of-life profiles.

The economic and social impacts that BIORING will have are significant, ranging from diversifying the product portfolio of high-performance bio-based UV-curing coatings, expanding their range of applications, to increasing the sustainability and circularity of bio-based coatings, with improvements in their health and safety compared to fossil-based coatings.

BIORING has the participation, in addition to FAB Group, of 13 other entities from different European countries (coordination is under the AGENCIA ESTATAL CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE INVESTIGACIONES CIENTCAS, Madrid, Spain).

The budget allocated to FAB Group is € 213,250.00 and the activities in which the company will be most involved will be the following:

  • “Coating validation with case studies”, where BIORING technology will be validated through the development of bio-based UV-curing coatings, verifying their workability and end-use performance through two case studies.
  • “Digital technologies process modeling, value chain integration, and techno-economic assessment”, where the aim is to apply data analytics and digital technologies to foster further scalability; as well as apply the Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) approach and develop integrated, sustainable, and cost-effective value chains.
  • “Value chain sustainability assessments”, for which the security and sustainability dimensions will be integrated from the early stages of the BIORING product innovation process.
