Digital transformation of quality control in the furniture sector

The SMARTMob project is the result of a collaboration between four leading companies in the Marche region in their respective sectors: IMAB GROUP SPA, FAB SRL, PANTAREI SRL, and DAGO ELETTRONICA SRL, with the aim of transforming the quality control process in the furniture sector.

Starting from August 2024, the companies, united in an RTI, started the project entitled “SMARTMob – traSforMazione digitAle del contRollo qualiTà nel sectore del Mobile”, co-financed by the Marche Region under the “ERDF PR 2021-2027 – AXIS 1 – SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 1.1 – ACTION 1.1.1 – Call “RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO INNOVATE THE MARCHE” – Incentives to companies for industrial research and experimental development activities in the areas of the Regional Strategy for Intelligent Specialization – AGGREGATION OF COMPANIES”.

The SMARTMob Project, with an estimated duration of 18 months, aims to transform the furniture sector through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure production with minimal defects. The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive framework that integrates AI-based solutions across the entire furniture manufacturing cycle, focusing on three key phases: laminate processing, drilling, and assembly.

Description Work Packages

The project begins with a research phase on strategies and tools for defect minimisation throughout the manufacturing cycle in the mobile sector. The main objective of WP1 is to fully understand the needs and objectives of the organization, ensuring the realization of “zero defects” in the furniture sector. Evaluating available data is essential for selecting and training the AI algorithm, which involves analyzing historical data and information to better understand the relationships between production parameters, quality, and efficiency.

Following the implementation of the activities envisaged in WP1, the 3 key project WPs will be launched, each of which will focus on each case study:

• WP2 – FAB. Quality control on the laminate (primary processing stage).
• WP3 – PANTAREI. Quality control in drilling (intermediate machining phase).
• WP4 – IMAB. Quality control in assembly and logistics (final processing and shipping stages).
